Approximately 9.8% of the annual expenditures of the government are devoted to the public health system. The Mauritians and permanent residents benefit from free medical services. Foreign visitors, however, must personally pay for their health needs. Expatriates are strongly recommended to take care of their health coverage before moving to Mauritius.
The Ministry of Health and quality of life is primarily responsible for the development of a public health program to meet the needs of the 1.3 million inhabitants.
Health centers are found in the villages and the cities, but the larger facilities are mainly located in the capital city of Port Louis.
The three largest hospitals in Mauritius are:
- National Hospital Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam
- Jeetoo Hospital
- Victoria Hospital
Are they reliable and affordable?
There are many affordable clinics, public hospitals and private hospitals in Mauritius. Public hospitals and clinics provide free medical services, including maternity care and financial assistance to eligible persons. Most of the doctors and surgeons have made their studies in western countries.
Many expatriates promote the Welkin Hospital at Ebène (former Apollo Bramwell) for its modern medical equipment and its excellent specialists.
Nowadays, medicine is considered as one of the most dynamic sectors in Mauritius. Local companies do not only supply the whole population of the island adequately, but they also export products such as drugs in mass, gelatin capsules, disposable syringes and other drugs to other African countries.
Expatriates will find a lot of pharmacies scattered throughout the island. However, the country is strict when it comes to the purchase of antibiotics. No pharmacy is authorized to sell or distribute antibiotics without prescription, so, do not forget to obtain your prescription from a doctor before purchasing antibiotics.
